Our Junior Competition is a locally run basketball competition where Springwood Scorchers teams play matches against each other over 18 weeks – two school terms. The four teams at the top of their division ladder at the end of the 18 week competition will play a knock out semi-final and final round.

We welcome team and individual nominations for Junior competitions prior to the start of a new competition during the nomination period. The nomination period opens four weeks prior to the beginning of the competition.

The Summer Competition begins on Monday of Week 1, Term 4.
The Winter Competition begins on Monday of Week 1, Term 2.

Individual nominations are welcome throughout our competitions, however most teams fill during the nomination period and we may not be able to guarantee you a place. Contact us to check availability.

You can nominate as a formed team, or attend muster day to form a team with other individual players.

A team must have a minimum of 6 players in the Junior Competition. Teams can have 10 players total.

U14, U16 and U18 boys teams can self nominate into their preferred divisions. Division 1 suits players looking for strong competition. Division 2 suits players looking for a social game. Where teams continue into the next competition and have won the previous competition by a significant margin, we may ask them to move to Division 1.

Basketball is a popular sport in the Blue Mountains and our divisions usually fill quickly. Our competition structure allows for a bye game each week.

Junior players pay a per-competition fee and are required to hold a current Basketball NSW membership.

Find out more about registration here.

All teams in the Junior Competition are required to organise a Coach, usually a parent, or one of our older junior players.

Teams are also required to nominate a parent or guardian of a player in the team as team Manager.

Adults in Coach or Manager positions are required to provide a valid working with children check (WWCC). WWCC are free for volunteers and available through Service NSW. Team nominations will not be accepted without complete WWCC information.

WWCC are validated through the NSW Office of the Guardian prior to the commencement of each competition or more frequently, as required.

Reversible singlets are available in the canteen for $45. Players will need to work with their teams to find a singlet with their preferred number that isn’t already in use in the team.

Players should wear plain black shorts and appropriate enclosed footwear.

PLAYER AGE RULES
Player age groups are determined by the age a player is on the last day of competition.

The last day of the Summer Competition is the last Friday of Term 1.
The last day of the Winter Competition is the last Friday of Term 3.

For instance, to play in the U12 divisions, a player must be 11 years old on the last day of the competition. If they are 12 on this day, they need to play in the U14 divisions. The association can make exemptions at their discretion (for instance if a player turns 12 two weeks before the end of the competition), please contact us if you’d like an exemption to be considered.

A player can request association approval to play up an age group if they have parental/guardian consent.

REPRESENTATIVE PLAYER RULE
To ensure equity, Junior competition teams are limited to 3 representative players of the same age group as their representative level. The representative content rule does not apply to representative players playing up an age group. Rep players hold onto their status as a representative player until the first rep season in which they are not on a team (i.e. a 2026 Rep player is still considered a Rep player in our 2026/27 Summer Competition for their previously represented age group, despite the Rep season being finished).
